There are a few A500 floppy games that I want to play on my CD32 that aren't available on the compilation CD's doing the rounds and I was wondering about the floppy drives for Amiga CD32 on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Floppy-Drive-for-Amiga-CD32-Games-Console_W0QQitemZ350291113951QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_VintageComputing_RL?hash=item518efa37df ...it apparently also turns the cd32  into an A1200 and includes a real time clock & printer port.

I read up on the SX1 add ons but I haven't got the money to purchase one of them so thought this (cheaper) floppy add-on seemed like a fairly good alternative? I've already got a working keyboard and thought this might be a good add-on (apart from the colour of the thing lol).

Anybody know if these units are any good and worth the purchase?

Also slightly off topic buy does anybody know where I can purchase the amiga (boxed) game North & South? I thought £50 for the game was a complete joke lol http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370248626352&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Thanks in advance

Yeah £50 seemed a bit steep... I'll go on the hunt to try and find it cheaper.

Do you know if the actual drive attachmentt is any good though?

i do know nothing about CD32,
but and with this drive can you play old games for A500 and for Kick 1.2 - 1.3 ect? i think no..

it all depends on what you want to achive.

I have the Sx-1 expansion for my CD32, and it's good for getting the most oout of the machine - it has extra fastram and an HD, and a floppy port and Keyboard port.

This means i can pretty much treat it like an A1200, and even run WHDload installed games on it.

The unit itself however, is bulky and disconnects from the machine a lot. An extra keybaord also takes up an annoying amount of space. These sort of things are exactly why i prefer my A1200. (nice cosy, all in one unit).

The SX32 expansion is better, and also comes with a better processor. This one slides "inside" the Cd32 mostly, rather than hanging off the back. This is by far the most desirably, and therefore expensive option.

The floppy expansion, as far as i know, doesnt given anyting else does it? No fast ram, no HD options. If you just want to play a few games that are CD32 compatible, (you may find a fair number of your favourites are not CD32 compatible on disk, although you can use a program called "Relokick" to emulate kicstart 1.3 and improve compatibilty a bit) and dont require a keyboard, thats fine, but a bit of fastram and an HD goes a lot further in you choices of games to play on the CD32 than a floppy drive does.

Hope that helps slightly

The sx1 is a good option.  I owned one for 12 years and it still works fine, altho it can be tricky getting it going.  You can put upto 8mb standard simm inside, and i have had a 40gb 3.5" hard drive and dvd-rw drive connected to the internal 44pin ide socket, so its fairly flexible.  Will also let you run os3.9 with no problems.
If you were luckey you might pick one up for just over £50 as well.  £50 is a lot to spend on just a floppy disk drive that looks out of place and covers up your amiga logo.

Sx32s of course better, but ive known the accelerated versions to cost over £400 in the past.
Amiga = A1200 + Blizzard1230IV + 16mbFast + BufferedIDE + 30GB3.5"HDD + DVDRW + PCMCIA-LAN Running AmigaSYS4

PC = CoreDuoE7300 + 4GB Ram + Nvidia 9600GT + 1TB HDD ON Asus P5KPL-AM Running Mandriva Linux 2010

I actually have "North and South" boxed back in England...  I might have bought it myself on ebay back when I was at university...
...
....  great game!  .. unsure I'd part with it though, its a good piece of nostalgia - oh, and its in England... a little far from where I am at the moment ;/

Well you've given me the options to think about.

I'm watching an SX-1 on ebay so if goes for the right price then I'll go for that.

@emuchicken: When you return and (if you ever) fancy parting with the game then please give me shout... if not I'll just keep my eyes peeled on ebay.

As allways - Thanks for the advice peeps.  ;D

I blew my SX-1 up, :(. Was modding and stupidly didnt confirm the socket pinouts and wired it all reversed. The keyboard translation IC baught it first, then my Alice cooked on my CD32, :(. I was devastated.
Main reason for mod was SX-1 was crap (connection wise), it kept comming loose and causing lots of problems. Idea was to mount it internally, ;).

As for the floppy attachment, thats all it is. You will still face the problems of old game not working.

Well the SX1 i was viewing on ebay sold for £110 so that was a bit out of my price range. I'll keep looking though.

Theres a few A500 games I want running though not on the cd32 compilations so if I can find the floppy attachment for cheaper then £49 then I might still just go with that (I've got a keyboard and mouse working on mycd32 so the disc drive would probably be all I need for those games?).

Should be, but remember some games still wont run on KS3.1, you would need something like Relokick to degrade it to KS1.3.

Well I just won a boxed version North & South on ebay for £9.74 so I'm quite happy with that.  ;D ...I just wish I kept all my omeba stuff first time round as I had hundreds of games!

Just need to lookout out for a cheap drive or sx-1 now.
