Title: AMOS Pro - Feedback From a First Time User
Post by: roberthazelby on February 20, 2011, 02:53:17 PM
Afternoon all,

After chipping away at installing AMOS Pro, V2.0 and AMOS Compiler during a couple of evenings over the past week, I spent 2 or 3 hours yesterday afternoon starting my first creation with the package.

I come from having no experience with AMOS (apart from playing a few games created with the package), so I've been learning as I go.

Well, I must say that I'm really impressed. I've been amazed at what you can knock-up with so little code, and so quickly.

I've had the PDF of the AMOS Pro manual open on my Mac, and AMOS itself, running on my Amiga, meaning it's been really easy to hop between coding and referencing examples.

My initial coding has so far got me (now, don't laugh!) displaying a black screen with some random stars, a "Press Fire" string being displayed, and a music module playing in the background.

Yesterday, before I stopped coding I had a quick dabble with the sprite creation/animation tool that comes with AMOS Pro. It was so easy to get results!

I'm now hooked, and have just ordered a copy of Phil South's AMOS guide book to help me along.

I don't know how far I'll get with this AMOS coding lark, as everyday life has a habit of getting in the way of my leisure time (as I'm sure it does for you all). The important thing is that I'm having fun, and although the stuff I've produced my seem pretty basic, it's really giving me a few "wow" moments.

Sorry for rambling, but I just had to post :)

We're glad you like the software.  We're rather fond of it ourselves!  We wouldn't have this website if it were not as good as it is.

It is a great piece of software which I have used over the past 10 years to make lots of programs and software - though my games certainly lack in the graphics department :(

Welcome aboard the flagship AMOS!

@Roberthazelby

Dear Friend:
the 'mastering amiga amos' book by Phil South is great introduction to make amos games.
It will be good enough to learn to code a nice game in amos.
I read it myself and liked it very much.
I will also suggest 'amiga game maker's manual' by Stephen Hill, is even better that Phil South's.
The game maker's manual explains how to code most kind of different games in amos,
including adventure, arcade and RPG, simulations.
Keep learning !!!

Many thanks for the recommendation. I bought the book from Amazon and it arrived today. It looks fantastic, and seems to be exactly what I need to really get me underway.

I've spent the last month or so tinkering with bits of code and examples from Phil South's book, but I think this will really get me up and running.

Thank you!
