Title: Books and Newsletters
Post by: skateblind on July 13, 2009, 03:32:15 AM
I will be scanning these books and news letters at some point, just thought I should show them to you first, just in case they are already available somewhere.

Well, I don't have that one, so scan and upload it please. :)

EDIT: I have uploaded the first pdf and attached it to this post. Let me know what you think about the quality and layout, if you like it, then I will continue to do the rest.

It looks good to me!  I just wish there were as many people still using AmosPro today.

Great! Nice to see these things preserved.
Would you be ok with it if I used your scans on amigacoding.com?

I would be fine with that. Give the right people credit though for each newsletter or book. Some credit for scanning the stuff would be nice. :)
I am not sure about the whole legality of this stuff, so don't put any contact details for me. ;)
I'll finish off some more of the pdfs tonight.

Issue #1 looks great, thanks for uploading it.

I don't have the equipment to scan issue #0, but I do have multiple copies of it. I could send one to someone here who can scan it for us.

Have more scans been done yet :) ?
I've setup a page for AMOS magazines on amigacoding.com (http://amigacoding.com/index.php/AMOS:Magazines).
Somewhere I have issues for Dutch AMOS magazines which I might scan too. It might take a while though before I find the time to do so.

I've also got a few questions:

All the scanning is done, I just need to put the images onto an easy to use pdf.  :)

There were only 4 issues with the first volume of official newsletters, but I don't know how many the second volume went up to. I have 4 issues of volume two, that may be as high as they went it.  ???

I also have issue one and two of the 'All about AMOS' newsletters.

Well, I don't know what software you use, but I just tried the trial for DeskPDF 2.5 Professional yesterday (from www.docudesk.com) and loved it so much that I have now paid for the full version. It's very easy... just create your PDF in your favourite software (I used Excel as I don't have Word installed, just WordPad which doesn't display images... only icons of the images!) and then print to DeskPDF. Instead of printing it to a printer it then creates an Adobé Reader compatible PDF file and asks you where to save it :)

Skip this babble if you wish, file is linked below the line (if you are logged in).

Babble:

I started off yesterday lunchtime trying to take pictures of the newsletter with my mobile phones camera. After much hassle, I finally got the right settings for taking decent pictures. However, this meant taking multiple shots of the same page.
Then came the problem of uploading the images from my phone to my laptop. So I had to dig around to find the box with the necessary cable. Took the cable out and put the box away. Sat down ready to do the job and then realised I needed the install disk from the box. Got the box out again, grabbed the disk and installed the Nokia PC Suite onto my laptop.
However, now the problem was that I had connected my mobile phone to my laptop via the USB slot and the software wasn't detecting the phone. After a while I discovered that the USB to USB extension I was using was the wrong kind of cable (no ratings marked on the box) as the software found the phone as soon as I removed it. The problem now was that the phone had to be left on the floor (my laptop is sat on a box  beside my bed) as the USB cable that came with the phone was miles too short, and couldn't be exchanged with another as the phone end of the connector used a type of connector specific to the phone. Urgh!!

Now I started putting the images together and well, let's say it looked ugly. By this time it was 8 hours later and I had almost given up. I took a full shot of the back page of the newsletter in desperation and it worked. Whilst the images I took earlier were blurry (hence having to split each page into multiple images) these weren't... I guess I had the right settings to make the image crisp (which I have listed on the last page of the PDF). So 8 images later, I transferred them from my phone to my laptop.
I opened up WordPad and tried importing the images. Every single time each image would only appear as a Firefox icon with the image title underneath. After messing about with WordPad for an hour or so it it me that I could use Excel instead as the PDF template.
So, I opened Excel and imported the image for page 1 perfectly. Except it was huge and it would print on multiple pages. A quick fix was found by forcing Excel to print it onto 1 page high by 1 page width (later changed to 9 pages high and 1 page width once everything was imported and credits page created). Only problem now is that normal sized text (10) appeared ridiculously small beneath each image. Another quick fix was found by increasing the text size to 26 and header title text to 72 (or thereabouts)!

Now I imported all other 7 images, created the text beneath some of the images where the text on the image could not be read (the light reflection was not caused by the camera flash, but the light above my head... it was night by now).
By now it was around 1:30am and I decided to create a credits page. I made sure to include to camera settings incase I need to do this again (well... I do, as somewhere I have a catalogue of Kixx games (I believe a subsidiary company of US Gold as their UK bases were next to each other) from the early 90's which I intend to turn into a PDF someday). To spice it up I threw in a picture of the AMOS box and disks which was on my laptop, along with some disk image bitmaps I created for use with my Dymo Labelprinter.
By now it was around 2:30am and I quickly logged into my email account and sent the PDF to the AMOS-list Yahoo Group before going to bed (after all that work I did not want to risk it being destroyed by anything).

Now, below is the PDF I created. The "scans" are slightly better quality in terms of readability (for most of them anyway) compared with Skates, although reading the tops of some of the pages may require increasing the magnification to around 400%, due to the angle that the images were taken at.

End babble :)
